Criw Update

Special announcement.

The Criw Cymraeg is very proud to announce that the school has achieved the Silver Award in the Cymraeg Campus Language Charter.

The assessor recognised that staff members are good role models for the language and have worked as a team to ensure that Welsh is continuing to develop and has a growing profile at the school. They state that Cymraeg Campus has become an integral part of the school ethos and consequently, Welsh is securely embedded at Ysgol Ffordun.

The Criw is now looking forward to beginning work on the gold award and they would be interested in hearing from any local Welsh speakers or Welsh learners that would be willing to work with them on this new challenge.

Tymor y Gwanwyn 2024

This term we have been busy designing and making the new Croeso sign on the fence, as our bottle top sign was destroyed one weekend. We have also begun to use our outdoor graffiti wall to practice some of our weekly phrases.

Another project has been the Cwtch Cymraeg, which we have moved from the gazebo to the shelter – this will make the display more weather-proof. Children were reminded during one of the Criw weekly assemblies to use this at break and lunchtimes as they are rewarded with a tocyn aur for using their Welsh.

The Criw decided to ask parents and pupils for their ideas on what Wales means to them for the Cymru Cyfoes display. This is in the library and aims to show a picture of modern Wales. They have sourced their own images and are proud of the results.

Our termly Welsh afternoon, based around Dydd Miwsig Cymraeg was a great success. Children enjoyed a disco, playground games, activities from a new resource, Cewri Cymru, and a listening activity where they listened to and gave their opinions of a range of styles and genre of Welsh music.

Mrs Davies (Cymraeg) has worked with the Criw and pupils looking at Welsh apps and the whole school have been learning Welsh pieces for both the School Eisteddfod and for a performance with Sinfonia Cymru.

Tymor yr Hydref 2023

Croeso to all our new members this term – we are all very excited about working together for the Silver Award, which we hope to acheive later in the year.

This term the Criw have been busy organising a Welsh afternoon for the whole school where they played different playground games, including Plis Mr Crocodeil, Mae lleidr yn y dref a mynd ar y trên i Aberystwyth. This kick-started Welsh Wednesday, where Criw members take it in turn to organise a Welsh game at lunchtime. They also organised and ran a Welsh game in the Christmas Fayre, encouraging pupils to speak Welsh as they played.

We have also visited Playgroup to play games with the children. With the help of Mrs Davies (Cymraeg) we have re-introduced the Welsh mascots with children deciding on their class’ mascot and its name. Diolch Mrs Davies. Another project that the Criw has worked hard on is encouraging pupils to speak Welsh in the canteen. This has been a real success. Lots of thanks to Jenny, the cook, who also speaks Welsh.

Finally the Criw have completed an audit of the Welsh in classrooms- which is looking good. We had a fantastic time filming with Menter Maldwyn for a music video to promote the Urdd Eisteddfod. This is coming to the area in May. Keep an eye out for the end result and see if you can spot Ysgol Ffordun.

This week we are challenging the children to use a range of the phrases that they have been practising throughout the year. Hopefully we will hear lots of conversations in and around the school to show what we have learnt.

This week’s Seren yr wythnos is Poppy Bevan, class 4. Da iawn Poppy. Class 4 have the dragon for the most tickets in their box this week.

Last week the staff, including lunch time supervisors were joined by Abermule school as they learnt several new playground games to teach the children. Diolch to Nia from Menter Maldwyn for providing the activities.

The Criw are gearing up to have their hard work assessed next week to see if they have gained the Bronze Award. Over the year they have organised a range of events, competitions and activities to promote Welsh in the school. Diolch a phob lwc.

The Clwb Cinio had their last lunchtime session this week, enjoying the weather with a picnic and parachute games. Diolch am y cacen Mrs Haine.

Our phrase of the week this week is Dw i’n hoffi dy… (I like your….. ). We suggest children use the phrase to evaluate things like dancing, singing and acting, especially with the school production of Matilda fast approaching. We are hoping that the children will evaluate their own music, art and DT work too. This week’s Seren yr wythnos is Connor Morrison, class 1. Da iawn Connor. Class 1 have the dragon for the most tickets in their box.

The juniors have been enjoying their Clwb Cinio. This week they decided to paint using phrases such as Ga i’r paent melyn os gwelwch yn dda? and Cymysgwch melyn a choch am baent oren.

Many thanks to those who helped raise money at the Christmas Fair for the new Scrabble game and rhyming word jigsaw. They have also planned and created a display to show the importance of learning Welsh and a new graffiti wall for children.

Introducing the Criw

Our Criw Cymraeg are a group of 6 children who plan the school’s actions for the Siarter Iaith. We are now working towards our Silver Award. They meet every week to plan what we will do next to meet each target.

They organise termly Welsh themed afternoons for the whole school and run weekly playground game sessions at lunchtime.

In addition to this they lead assembly on a Tuesday, where they introduce a phrase to practice and choose the Welsh song to sing. In Friday’s assembly they give out certificates for the Seren yr wythnos in each class.

Here you can zoom through space and discover stories, songs and games created especially for young Welsh learners. Bliblob is an animated, talking guide who morphs into the meaning of Welsh words used in the stories and the songs. Bliblob can also be used either with the stories and songs or on its own to learn new words and sentences in a fun way.
